Tour highlights…

Herculaneum

Herculaneum, originally a rich seaside resort, was also destroyed in 79 A.D. The small archaeological site has been sympathetically excavated to preserve the atmosphere of a once vibrant community tragically (and in the case of the sheltering inhabitants, literally) frozen.

Vesuvius

Vesuvius – still an active volcano with steaming fumaroles, the fabulous view embraces the island of Capri and Ischia, the mountains of the Abruzzo and the beach where Pliny the Elder died.

Pompeii

Pompeii – home of Caecilius, buried in the thick layer of ash and lava, which poured down from the devastating eruption in 79AD.

Taormina

Taormina – Sicil Tauromenion, a spectacular location on a terrace of Monte Tauro. The City with its wonderful Greco-Romano Theatre, small archaeological museum and mediaeval streets, played a prominent role in both Syracusan and Roman Politics before becoming a playground for the European Jet Set and Film Set for the ‘Godfather’ Movies.

Giardino Naxos

Giardino Naxos – now a pleasant fishing port with beach, originally the first Greek Cleruchy on Sicily with a small Museum and Archaeological Park largely ignored by Tourists.

Epipolae and Syracuse

Epipolae and Syracuse – Quarries, Amphitheatre, Theatre and Archaeological Museum – copies of Thucydides and flasks of hydromel optional!

Ortigia

Ortigia – the original island settlement, now joined by two causeways to the mainland, boasts an array of tiny shops in winding lanes and the remains of a Temple to Hera extending from within the Duomo

Selinunte

Selinunte (Megara Hyblaea) – a collection of ruined Greek Temples (Temples G, Jove, F,E and Juno, the latter now restored) and Acropolis (Temples, Houses, fortifications, multiple defensive gateways and small Museum).

Agrigento

Agrigento (Akragas) – a vast array of temples (Juno, Herakles, Concordia, Jupiter) and Archaeological Museum with vast Ceramic collection and giant Telamon statue.

Roman Villa at Piazza Armerina

Roman Villa at Piazza Armerina – famous hunting lodge containing 36,000 square feet of intricate mosaics.

Catania

Catania – Chalcidic cleruchy and Athenian HQ during the ill fated expedition and to which the Salaminia sailed in hope of indicting Alkibiades. Theatre, Archaeological Museum, Duomo and composite Elephantine Statue.
