Trace the development of Greek civilisation from the Mycenaean era, through Archaic and Classical to Hellenistic Greece. A programme which can easily be shortened to include archaeological sites and museums specific to your areas of study.

Day 1

Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion< Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion

Flight to Athens. Thorikos rectangular theatre and ergasterion en route to Cape Sounion Temple of Poseidon. Evening meal at local taverna in bay beneath beautifully floodlit Temple. Overnight in Athens

Day 2

Theatre of Dionysus

< Theatre of Dionysus

Full day in Athens. Morning visits to the Acropolis, Areopagus, Agora, Theatre of Dionysus and Temple of Olympian Zeus. After lunch explore Pnyx and Koile before visiting the spectacular New Acropolis Museum, home to some of the most amazing examples of Archaic and Classical sculpture. Evening meal and overnight in Athens.

If time permits, visit the archaeology and mini museums preserved within Athens’ Metro system or climb Lykabettos for stunning views of Athens by night.

Day 3

Morning visit to the National Archaeological Museum and Kerameikos or Library of Hadrian and Roman Agora.

Mycenaean frescoes Thebes Archaeological Museum< Mycenaean frescoes Thebes Archaeological Museum

Transfer to Delphi via the new award-winning Museum at Thebes and working Byzantine monastery at Ossos Loukas, to view the remarkable collection of mosaics. Lunch en route. Evening meal and overnight in Delphi.

Day 4

Pre breakfast, the energetic can climb to the peribolos overlooking the stadium for sunrise, passing rock cut chamber tombs en route.
Morning visit to Athena Pronaos, Castalian Spring, Temenos of Apollon and Museum. Transfer to Olympia, via the heritage port of Galaxidi and/or Nafpaktos. Lunch en route. Evening meal and overnight in Olympia. Seasonal visit to Ancient Science Museum.

Day 5

Morning visit to the site of Olympia and its 5 excellent museums, containing a noteworthy collection of sculptures, ceramics and bronzes.

Lunch in Olympia with optional Greek Cookery Workshop. Afternoon continue to the Sanctuary of Bassae and Temple of Apollo Epikourous. Located on top of a mountain peak, with breathtaking views, this is one of the most important temples of antiquity. Transfer to Tolo. Evening meal and overnight in Tolo or Nafplion.

Day 6

Mycenae
< Mycenae

Full day excursion to Mycenae, Tyrins, Nafplion and Epidavros. At Mycenae explore the Citadel, Museum and Treasury of Atreus, a fine example of a beehive tomb, followed by a visit to Tiryns to see the staggering Cyclopean walls.

< Tiryns

Lunch in Nafplion, the first capital of Modern Greece, with time to visit Palamidi and the Dendra Armour in the Archaeological Museum. Onwards to the medical sanctuary of Epidavros with ancient disabled ramps, abaton, impressive theatre and museum. Evening meal and overnight in Tolo/Nafplion.

Day 7

Ancient Stadium of Nemea<Ancient Stadium of Nemea

Full day excursion to Nemea, site of Herakles slaughtered of the lion, to view unique remains including Greek spa baths, temple and stadium, complete with propylaea, covered athletes’ tunnel and off centre turning post. Lunch en route.

Acrocorinth< Acrocorinth

Visit Akro Corinthos, Ancient Corinth and newly refurbished and extended Museum. Return to Tolo/Nafplion for evening meal and overnight.

Day 8

Argive Heraion< Argive Heraion

Morning visit to the Argive Heraion of Kleobis & Biton fame, Ancient Argos for the the museum and theatre. Brief stop at Corinth Canal and Diolchos.

If time allows, lunch at Elefsina and visit site of the Eleusinian Mysteries and Museum.Transfer to Athens airport and your return flight to the UK
