This tour offers the chance to trace the development of Greek civilisation, beginning with the Mycenaean period continuing through Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic Greece. A programme which includes the most important archaeological sites and museums can only help to enhance your students’ appreciation of the Greek contribution in shaping the world around us.
Day 1
Arrive in Athens. Evening meal in a local taverna at Cape Sounion, overlooking the sea and the beautifully floodlit Temple of Poseidon. Overnight in Athens.
Day 2
Full day in Athens. Morning visits to the Acropolis; the Theatre of Dionysus and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Time for lunch before visiting the spectacular New Acropolis Museum, home to some of the most amazing examples of Archaic and Classical sculpture. Evening meal and overnight in Athens.
Day 3
Morning visit to the National Archaeological Museum and Agora. Afternoon transfer to Delphi, via the Byzantine monastery at Ossos Loukas, to view the remarkable collection of mosaics. Evening meal and overnight in Delphi.
Day 4
Morning visit to Athena Pronaos. Continue to the Castalian Spring, once the sacred source of Delphi & the Temenos of Apollon. Transfer to Olympia, via the heritage port of Galaxidi. Evening meal and overnight in Olympia.
Day 5
Morning visit to the site of Olympia and its excellent museums, containing a noteworthy collection of sculptures, ceramics and bronzes. In the afternoon continue to the Sanctuary of Bassae, to explore the 5th C Temple of Apollo Epikourous. Located on top of a mountain peak, with breathtaking views, this is one of the most important temples of antiquity. Transfer to Tolo. Evening meal and overnight in Tolo.
Day 6
Full day excursion to Mycenae, Nafplion, Tiryns and Epidavros. At Mycenae explore the Citadel and the Treasury of Atreus, a fine example of a beehive tomb, followed by a visit to Tiryns to see the staggering Cyclopean walls. Afternoon visit to Nafplion, the first capital of Modern Greece, and then Epidavros, the ancient medical sanctuary with its impressive theatre. Evening meal and overnight in Tolo.
Day 7
Full day excursion to Nemea, where Herakles slaughtered the lion, to view unique remains including Greek spa baths, temple and the stadium, complete with propylaea and covered athletes’ tunnel. Time to explore the site of the Ancient Corinth, before returning to Tolo. Evening meal and overnight in Tolo.
Day 8
Morning visit to Argos to visit the museum and theatre. If time allows, continue to the site of Eleusis before your transfer to Athens airport for your return flight.
Optional Extras: Workshops in Athens and Nafplion for both prep and senior schools on mythology, masks, pottery, clay toys and musical instruments. Full day cruise to Aegina Museum and Temple of Aphaea. Full day trips to Sparta and Mystras. Evening in Athens at Hellenic Cosmos Museum.
