This tour tells the story of Rome’s tumultuous history through an in-depth exploration of its ancient remains and provides a fascinating insight into everyday life in the Roman Empire, with a tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum. You cannot help but be inspired by the craftsmanship and construction, along with the sheer scale of remains to explore.
Day 1
Arrive in Rome. Your Hellene rep will meet you on arrival and accompany you to your accommodation in Rome, stopping at the once bustling port of Ostia Antica en route. Evening meal in local trattoria.
Day 2
Full day in Rome. Spend the day casting a critical eye over Augustus’ claims “I found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble”, visiting the Imperial Forum and Palatine Hill. Check into the Flavian Dynasty briefly at the Colosseum and then onto Theatre of Marcellus. Finish the day with a quick stop at the Trevi Fountain to ensure your return to Rome! Evening meal in local trattoria.
Day 3
A trip to Rome is not complete without a visit to the Vatican museums, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. Stop by the Mouth of Truth and Temple of Vesta en route and wander through the magical district of Trastevere in the early evening. Evening meal in local trattoria.
Day 4
Transfer to Sorrento by coach stopping at the Amphitheatre and Mithraeum at Capua en route. Onwards to the summit of Mount Vesuvius where the views of Capri and Ischia are unrivalled (on a clear day). Arrive in Sorrento with its cobbled back streets and Roman monumental arch underpinned suitably on Greek foundations. Evening meal in hotel.
Day 5
Step back into 79 A.D. on a full day excursion to Pompeii; revisit the city as it was preserved, buried in layers of ash and lava. Evening meal in hotel.
